Dr. George G. Adams

Research Summary

Professor Adams is conducting basic research in areas involving friction-induced instabilities in sliding contact. In particular he showed that the sliding of two elastic half-spaces upon each other is dynamically unstable for a wide-range of material combinations, friction coefficients, and sliding speeds (including very small speeds). This behavior occurs even without a speed-dependent friction coefficient. The consequence of this instability is the creation of regions of separation and/or stick-slip zones, the behaviors of which are also being explored.
