Articular cartilage functions as a bearing material of synovial joints providing low friction and wear and also helping in the distribution of the load. The degeneration of the articular cartilage is an underlying problem in the pathogenesis of Osteoarthritis and other related diseases. Cartilage can withstand various physiological forces due to its ECM which is mainly composed of collagen and proteoglycans. These are degraded inside the body by collagenase and MMP. The Five Piston Compression Bioreactor is a novel system which will help test the effect of compressive loading on the enzymatic effect of collagenase on the mechanical properties of cartilage. This bioreactor will also be used to apply compressive loading to engineered cartilage.
