About Me:

My name is Ryan Whelan.  I am a junior at Northeastern University, and I’m majoring in Computer Engineering.  At Northeastern, I participate in IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), NUCAR (Computer Architecture Research Group), IIA (Institute for Information Assurance), and I’m a freshman peer mentor.  I am also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.  In my free time, I play bass guitar, listen to music, and scuba dive.  I also like to go snowboarding/longboarding/skateboarding with my friends.

Research:

I spent a good deal of my freshman year researching the effects of effective spam email filtering.  You can read more about my research by clicking here.  I also submitted a paper to CEAS 2007 (Conference on Email and Anti-Spam), and you can read that by clicking here.  Even though my paper didn’t get accepted, I was still able to attend the conference from the research grant I received.

In the Fall 2008 semester, I performed performance analysis of VMware ESX.  For this work, I utilized the VAmark framework developed by Steven Chen, a NUCAR graduate student.  This work focused mainly on CPU and File I/O performance of VMware ESX.

Recently, I received a NSF Federal Cyber Service Scholarship for Service.  As a result of this, I will be focusing my studies on computer and systems security in preparation for my next coop and a two-year commitment of federal information assurance work.  Currently, I am investigating the security of embedded systems.

Work:

My internship after freshman year was a R&D position for virtualization performance analysis at Network Engines in Canton, MA.

My first co-op was working as an electrical engineering research assistant in a Microfluidics lab at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

My second co-op was in the Ecosystems Engineering, Server Business Unit division of R&D at VMware in Palo Alto, CA.

I will be looking for my third co-op in the fall.  My previous experiences have helped me decide that I would like to pursue more software-oriented work.
