Course Description:
Studies the theoretical background and the state of the art in the areas of contact,
lubrication and wear mechanics. Brief review of elasticity, fluid mechanics and
probability theory is provided. Methods of characterization of engineering surfaces
and use of surface profilers are introduced. Hertzian contact, contact of rough surfaces,
real area of contact, rolling contacts, friction of solids are studied. Theory of
lubrication, compressible and incompressible Reynolds equation, effects of slip flow
are introduced.
