Doctoral Fellowships in Intelligent Diagnostics for Aging Civil Infrastructure -- Available Fall 2009
Northeastern University has been awarded an NSF IGERT to award Fellowships for doctoral students pursuing inherently interdisciplinary degree programs in Intelligent Diagnostics for Aging Civil Infrastructure. See 2007 Press Release. For more information about the IGERT Fellowship program and admissions please see: our website.
Graduate Research Assistantship - Available Immeadiately - 2 positions available
This project is funded through the NSF funded Engineering Research Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging (CenSSIS) and is used to develop and use an integrated modeling environment that will support multiple modality data fusion. Nondestructive subsurface sensors use waves to probe media. These waves propogate through the subsurface and reflect or refract as they reach changes in the subsurface. The research objective is to develop model-based assessment strategies that are generally applicable to cluttered and inhomogeneous media (such as soils). Modalities of interest are ground penetrating radar with possible extension to electrical impedance and seismic testing. The proposed research seeks to quantifiably detect subsurface defects leading to more informative diagnostic information, and ultimately significant rehabilitation cost savings.
The NSF ERC Center for Subsurface Imaging and Sensing Systems (CenSSIS), provides interdisciplinary expertise with imaging and signal processing strategies to solve diverse and interdisciplinary applications and offers student support, interdisciplinary curricula, as well as educational and professional training opportunities through annual CenSSIS conferences.
Currently, one PhD - level student is developing the electromagnetic modeling. Funding is available to support seismic model development. Additional support may be available to develop data fusion techniques for diagnostics of reinforced concrete structures. Contact Professor Wadia-Fascetti for more information.
